Why I Created The Private Staff Life
Working in private households can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be complex and at times, isolating. Sometimes you are not sure who to turn too for advice.
Throughout my career, I have experienced both small everyday challenges and more significant workplace issues. This included being contacted outside working hours, including evenings and weekends. Often, these messages did not require an immediate response and could have waited until the next working day. What made it difficult wasn’t the communication itself, but the lack of clarity around expectations and availability.
Over time, I learned how important it is to address this professionally. By having clear conversations around availability for example, responding during working hours, in genuine emergencies, or the morning before I was due at work it became possible to set boundaries without damaging trust or the working relationship.
Those experiences highlighted a wider issue within private households. Many private staff care deeply about their roles and want to be supportive or feel they need to be constantly '‘on”. One of the biggest challenges of working in a private home is maintaining healthy professional boundaries while building close working relationships.
I created Private Staff Life to offer private staff a confidential, non-judgemental space to talk things through, gain clarity and prepare for professional conversations before situations become overwhelming ,especially if you work alone.
Whether it is navigating your boundaries, reviewing a contract, planning a role change, or simply having someone neutral to listen, The Private Staff Life exists to support those working behind the scenes in private homes.
Household professionals work with the utmost discretion, responsibility and commitment. They deserve clarity, respect and support in return. It is so important that private staff advocate for themselves to protect your wellbeing when building a sustainable career.
