What Makes Someone Good at Working in a Private Household?
Working in a private home is very different from working in most other environments. You are not only doing a job, you are working in someone’s home, often around their family, routines and personal life. You are there for literally everything. Of course, experience and qualifications matter, but I really feel the people who are best at private household work usually have something else too. It is almost a personality trait.
A lot of private staff are naturally caring people. We often want to help, keep things running smoothly and make life easier for the people we work for. I know I can be a bit of a people pleaser myself, which I think is probably quite common in this industry. Being instinctive is another quality that really helps in private household work. A lot of the time, you need to notice what is going on without being told. It might be knowing when someone needs help, when something needs doing or when it is better to give the family or principal some space.
That instinct often comes with experience, but I also think some people naturally have a stronger feel for it than others. It is about understanding how to read a situation, when to step in, when to take a step back and how to remain professional. Discretion is also one of the most important things to remember when working within the private industry. You should not need to be told to keep information private or when it might be better to leave a room. You learn how to read people and anticipate what might be needed next.
Flexibility is super important and is a massive part of the job. Schedules can change at the drop of a hat and being able to work calmly through this is essential. Of course, being adaptable does not mean you have to say yes to absolutely everything. There is no one type of person who is perfect for private household work. Every home is different and every role comes with its own expectations, but the people who tend to do well are often those who can combine professionalism with warmth, good judgement, initiative and flexibility.
Taking pride in your daily work and having a positive attitude is valuable too. The family, principal or co-workers will really appreciate this and it can make a real difference to the day-to-day running of the household. Having years of experience does not automatically make someone the most professional person in the room. The way you carry yourself, the trust you build and the standard of work you consistently bring to the role matter just as much.
At the end of the day, being good at private household work is not just about what is on your CV, it is about how you show up every day.
